Two teams were selected from the Firsts and Reserves along with a number of 'guest' players and they went head to head on a scortchingly hot afternoon. They played in front of many supporters and family members who had come to cheer them on.
The Royal Blues started the game strongly and raced into a 2 goal lead as their pacey secret weapon, James Maybe outstripped the Dark Blues defence to grab a first half brace.
The shock of conceeding to Mayne spurred the Dark Blues into action. The telepathic combination of Richard Ingram, Martin Plumbridge and Adam Tinkham set about getting back into the game and they did with first half goals from Ingram, Jeffcock and Plumbridge to give them a 3-2 lead at half time.
In the second half it looked like the Dark Blue dominance would continue but Kit Duggan capitalised on a Craig Harris error in goal and levelled the scores.
Mayne then thought he'd secured his hat-trick however a GAR (Greg Assistant Referee) decision concluded that Mayne had shoved Will Foster in the back with two hands to gain an unfair advantage.
As legs tired it was Ingram that stole the show as he completed his hat-trick and picked up the man-of-the-match award.
Late in the game the Dark Blues were awarded a penalty, 5 year old mascot Alfie Hobden demanded to be subbed on to take it. He ran on, dispatched the penalty, and immediatly subbed himself off again having done his job for the day.
With the final score finishing 6-3 the players shook hands and retreated to the clubhouse for a well earned drinks.
A massive thank you goes to Donald and Joe Bennett for donating a fantastic BBQ for the players and supporters. With homemade burgers and sausages from the farm everyone was left well and truely happy!
A great day had by all!
