Chadlington First Team returned to league action this week having been unfortunatly dumped out of the last cup competition last week to Eynsham SSC. They deserved more from the game but after a run of poor results confidence seemed low. In fact Chads defeat meant that they hadnt won for 5 games.
This week they faced Combe in Division One who sit near the foot of the table but have many games in hand. Chad still sit 4th in the league but have now lost ground on the teams above.
With a depleted squad this week, Will Foster and Cameron Hannington were called up from the Reserves. Both stepped up to the mark well but 17 year old Hannington in particular performed outstandingly and was man of the match.
The whole team dug deep and from the lows of recent weeks they turned it around through sheer hard work.
Matt Chadwick and 16 year old Roman Harris got Chads goals which gave them a comftable 2-0 victory.
The victory lifts them to third in Division One and gives them something once again to fight for in the season.
Team: Bennett, Foster, Walker T, Webb (c), Holland, Hannington, Harris, Hazlewood, Woodward, Morley, Chadwick. Subs: O'Brien.
Chadlington Reserves travelled to Spartan Rangers A on Saturday in Division Four. With no other league fixtures for other teams, this was a chance of Chad to close the lead on the top of the table. Their opponents though had beaten them earlier in the season 3-2 at home and so Chad knew not to take them lightly despite their lowely league position.
With a couple of players called up into the First Team, the squad was slightly changed from previous weeks. There was a boost though with Steve Hardiman returning to the squad for his first game of the season and Luke Bayliss returning in goal following a lengthy injury lay off.
On a bumpy and soft pitch the Reserves had the best of the first half and created a stack of chances. Lacking the killer instinct and having some unfortunate bounces the scoreline stayed at just 1-0. Chads goal came from Charlie White who slotted home following a goalkeeping mistake.
In the second half Chad knew they had more to give but very quickly they nearly conceeded. Spartand 2 physical strikers were a handful all game and offered a constant threat to Chads lead.
It took until the 60th minute before the lead was doubled, Ollie Jordan pounced in the box to continue his good goal scoring run and reward his hard work through out.
With 20 minutes to go, Andy Watson was introduced into the game and he quickly became the centre of Chads play. Failing to score with his first touch of the game, minutes later he had the ball in the back of the net but the flag was up and the goal ruled out. Watson wasnt to be put off and via an impressive ball from keeper Bayliss, he latched on and fired home for his first goal of the season.
Further chances came and went, Chad hit the bar and Kevin Mulhearn popped up in the box to scissor kick a shot on target. To the whole of the ground it looked in, but a brilliant save from Spartans keeper somehow kept it out. In a week that the life of Gordon Banks was being celebrated it seemed fitting.
At the final whistle the score remained 3-0 to Chad. The win lifts them to second in the league, level on points with Milton at the top but with a game in hand. This was also their 5th clean sheet of the league season and by a mile they have the best defensive record in the league.
Team: Bayliss, Godin A, Mulhearn, Jeffcock (c), Hardiman (jnr), Godin E, Taylor, Hobden, Wellstood, White, Jordan. Subs: Watson, Hardiman (snr), Kemp.
