Chadlington First Team faced Witney Royals on Saturday at Burwell Meadow in what was both teams penultimate game of the season. The two sides found themselves level on points after 16 games but with Royals having a superior goal difference of 5 and winning the reverse fixture 4-3 , Chadlington knew that only victory would do if they wanted to clinch fourth position in the league.
With the pitch living up to its name the ankle deep grass could have caused Chadlington difficulty in the game as they looked to impose themselves early on. This was achieved when after only 8 minutes Jordan Godfrey lobbed the out rushing Royals keeper having been played smartly in by Jacob Hazlewood.
Chad should have pressed on and built up a comfortable lead as they dominated the game, however Royals struck back to equalise through Liam Readhead. The goal was against the run of play but it gave the home side hope and they rallied to put Chad on the back foot.
The lead was restored after 35 minutes when Mikey Taylor powered in a header from a Warren Holland corner. The goal spurred Chadlington back into life and the set about once again building a cushion.
Just 5 minutes later the score was 3-1 when Godfrey tore through the Royals back line only to be tripped as he rounded the keeper inside the box. It was Godfrey who stepped up to take the penalty and he dispatched it confidently.
At half time the scoreline remained 3-1 to the visitors and Chad focused during the break on how they could punish Royals further. More chances followed and Chad looked comfortable however the home side once again snatched a goal on the counter attack.
Dave Cross coming on as a substitute got in behind the Chad back line and narrowly beat the outstretched arm of Matt Chadwick in goal. 3-2.
The scoreline flattered Royals and for the rest of the game Chadlington pressed hard to restore a 2 goal lead. They did so via Alfie Peachey, on as a 2nd half substitute he bundled in his first goal for the First Team on his debut.
At the final whistle the score was 4-2 to Chadlington and the team walked off the pitch knowing that they had played well. With the win they had also leapfrogged Witney Royals into 4th position in Division One and restored their goal difference to positive.
